19th-May-2006 09:00 pm - My sister beating me at poker
Yesterday (Thursday), I improved on the computer program I am doing for David, I just need one last stuff (which I don't know how to do) to make it perfect. Because of me being addicted to trying to finish the David thing, I left my house late on my route to Applebees to have dinner with Nalleli, who had her 22nd birthday yesterday. When I arrived (90 minutes late), I was surprised to see I was the only guy among 9 girls. I like the ratio. I had fun conversing with Jessica and Blanca, very good friends. I hadn't seen Jessica in a while and she finally gave me back a book on Van Gogh I lent her two years ago.

At night, my sister and me went to Carlos's house to have poker night. We played for 5 bucks a piece. And my sister beat us all. She won 20 bucks and Diego got second place, good for ten bucks. It was fun, the best part was at the end that Carlos, Diego, Maribel and me talked for a while. Carlos was doing the talking, giving us information on bees. His uncle had a lot of bees and he knew a lot about bees. The topic came out because I jumped from the floor when I saw a scorpion and they realized I had the belief that scorpions could kill you with a sting (yes, they told me when I was little and since nobody ever told me otherwise, I kept with the belief until yesterday). The talk was fun and I learned a lot. I also learned how maple syrup is made and Carlos had real maple syrup in his house and he gave me a taste, it definitely tastes different than "Aunt Jemima".

This morning, Lala, Héctor, Elías and Román came by for some SMASH Bros. Román and I improved our game. I was the only player that played all the time when we were playing free for all, since I never finished last. Although I did play on survival mode, which can look like cowardice.
We also played three tournaments where each one of us would have 3 characters. Elías went undefeated, but he had a good time. At the end we played a 15 life battle Lala-Héctor vs. Elías-Enrique. We were winning throughout the match, but at the end some lucky moments plus better play got them back into the action, yet Elías and I were too good for them and we won. It was very fun.
18th-May-2006 12:40 am - Recap of a Wednesday
Woke up at 8:30am to play some SMASH Bros. Played until 2pm. Román had to leave, it was a good thing because that way I had time to see the last thirty minutes of the UEFA Champions League Final match. In SMASH I played much better than the last two times we played, but I am still worse than Lala, Héctor and Elías. Elías was clearly the best today.

Barcelona beat Arsenal 2-1, not a surprise, Barcelona is clearly the best team in the world right now. I am very glad that two Spanish teams have the two most important cups: Barcelona with the UEFA Champions League (the highest European football honor) and Sevilla with the UEFA Cup (the cup for the group of second best teams).

The Cleveland-Detroit game was awesome. I am so happy Cleveland won. Detroit has the best team in the NBA right now and when I heard Cleveland beat Detroit three out of four times in the regular season I thought the series might be good, but then Detroit beat Cleveland easily on the first two games. Cleveland has won the last three games on games that went to the wire. Really fun to watch, although it was a circus at some point with too many fouls, technical fouls and missing easy baskets. I still think Detroit will win this series, although I really hope Cleveland wins, I always like the underdog.

The Dallas-San Antonio game was very good as well. Bowen did a great job with that block on Nowitzky. Both Duncan and Nowitzky played unbelievably. I think Dallas will take the series in game 6. Home court advantage is really important.

I had a meeting with a CS professor about doing some research this summer with her. She gave me a couple of possible projects, I'll read on them tomorrow and then on Friday we have another meeting. Let's see what happens. I feel really productive right now, so it would be good to focus my energies on some worthwhile project.

I got to see Emmanuel's new home. He now lives in El Paso. His grandmother likes me as her own son (Emmanuel and me are friends since we were two years old). She made me some burritos and we talked for a while. Then Emmanuel was bragging about how he can record stuff on his TV and then rewind and pause the TV and stuff. We watched two episodes of Simple Life 2. It was hilarious, Paris and Nicole are like a female live version of Beavis and Butthead.

I plan to write my interesting poker hands soon. I think they deserve an entry.
16th-May-2006 12:52 am - Racquetball
Woke up early to go play some racquetball. I picked up Diego and we went to UTEP to play. The bridge was very long, but talking with Diego made the trip go fast, and the Melon drinks helped too, very refreshing. I know I will miss the aguas frescas once I live México.
The scores on the first two games were 15-12 Diego beating me and 15-10 Lencho beating me (in between Lencho beat Diego). I was furious at how I misplayed the end of those two games and went to another court to practice while Lencho and Diego were having their second match, which Lencho won. I came back ready to beat Lencho. I started well, and I noticed a strategy I could use against Lencho. That strategy worked to propel me to 13-6 after being 7-6, but Lencho adjusted and caught up to put the game 13-13. But I managed to finish the game and win 15-13. I used all my energy, so when Diego came in the court to challenge me, I had nothing and quickly fell behind 14-1. Not being a quitter I did my best to pull off a comeback, but I was well-short of doing that and lost 15-7.
It was very fun.

For the rest of the day I have been programming to solve these challenges. The one where I had to solve the sum of the digits of 100! was harder than I imagined. I needed to do some research on the internet to figure out how to deal with big numbers. I found the class BigIntegers which has been quite helpful. So, besides being fun, I have actually learned some stuff doing these challenges. But, I am well away from solving all of them and the challenges get harder and harder.

The new episode of "24" was pretty good. I don't think they will get the president at the end, although the preview of the next episode showed Bauer putting a gun to his head, so next episode (which is a 2-hour season finale) is a MUST-SEE.
